Himoriwabi Japanese Kiriko Glassware Collection

Handmade Kiriko glassware by master artisans through 6 broad steps of:

Wari-dashi, Ara-kezuri, Sanban-gake, Ishi-gake, Migaki, and Bafu-gake.

Kiriko glassware's true beauty lies in the juxtaposition of "light" and "shadow". Observing from different angles yield different aesthetics.

What is Kiriko? (A Conscise Explanation)

Kiriko is a unique Japanese tradition of hand-cutting delicate patterns into glass, producing mesmerizing reflections of light depending on the angle of both light & the observer's eyes.

What is Kiriko glassware used for?

Kiriko glassware is made to be used in daily life, not simply for display.

Owners of Kiriko glassware tend to choose pieces that symbolize something that represent themselves or that they are fond of.

By doing so, they surround & remind themselves with these positive symbols on a daily basis, allowing beauty & art to enrich daily life.

What does Kiriko symbolize?

Different designs & patterns on each glass have different stories and meanings.

An example is the Kiku Tsunagi interlocking chrysanthemum patterns symbolizing health & longevity. Each Kiriko glass we have in Himoriwabi has it's own unique pattern & design that is explained on each page.

Perhaps you'll be able to find one that symbolizes you.

6 Steps of Kiriko

Kiriko glass is entirely handmade by experienced artisans through 6 broad steps.

1. Wari-dashi: Marking lines for pattern to be cut

2. Ara-kezuri: A diamond wheel is used to shape the foundation of the design

3. Sanban-gake: Extremely precise cuttings that draw out the final pattern

4. Ishi-gake: Natural stones & artificial grindstones used to smooth out surface of the glass

5. Migaki: Rotating wooden disk used to polish the glass & heighten lucidity

6. Bafu-gake: Cotton used to buff & reveal the true shine & transparency of the glass

Kiriko as a thoughtful gift

Kiriko is a gift that represents positive well wishes & comes alive when it is put to regular use.

So much so that it has become a popular wedding gift! A set of two glasses (one red & one blue) is often given to a bride and groom on their special day.

As glassware, Kiriko has a place in every home and can even be seen in the Prime Minister's Office of Japan!

The "light & shadow" of Kiriko

When glass has a smooth surface, light passes through. However, when the surface is cut, light bounces off, creating a "shadow". The patterns of each glassware can clearly be seen in the juxtaposition of "light" and "shadow".

Depending on the angle of light & the angle of the viewer, the pattern struck by Kiriko varies each time.
